Tough choice: Tech decisions

Technology is constantly evolving and it always seems like there are choices to make. If you make the wrong choice, you could be stuck with the next 'Beta' or 8-track format. Here are some examples of tech decisions that we often must ponder.

Home video: Even though Blu-ray beat HD DVD in the latest video format war, some people still wonder if they should make the jump from DVD to Blu-ray.

By the way, what's the difference between DVD and Blu-ray? Find out here.

Some say Blu-ray disc players are the ideal choice for watching movies in true, crisp and clear high-definition video on an HDTV. But others argue an upscaling DVD player will (almost) do the same job, but will allow you to keep and use all the DVDs you already own.

Digital cameras: Point-and-shoot cameras are great for the casual shutterbug. They tend to be inexpensive, have great built-in features and can easily fit into a purse or roomy pocket without trouble.

A digital SLR camera may not fit in your pocket, but you can control exposure levels, buy interchangeable lenses and get higher quality images than you would with most point-and-shoot cameras.

Laptops: How are 'netbooks' and laptops different? Read this.

In general, if you're looking for a smaller-sized PC that allows you to surf the Web, blog, e-mail or stream video/audio on the go, then a netbook might be perfect for you.

But if you're looking for a portable computer that lets you edit photos/videos, watch HD movies, run complex software or play PC games, then you are probably in the market for an all-purpose laptop.

Computers: In the tech world, there may not be a more divisive question than: Mac or PC?
